Have you ever thought about the role that a volunteer
plays in patient care at Monongahela Valley Hospital? There are
many dedicated men and women who indirectly assist the hospital
staff in maintaining patient needs.
Monongahela Valley Hospital is a facility that is
rooted in tradition, innovation and community care dating back to
1902 for Charleroi-Monessen Hospital and 1909 for Memorial Hospital
of Monongahela.
Established in 1972 from the consolidation of those
two hospitals and opened in 1978, Monongahela Valley Hospital is
a 224-bed acute care facility in Carroll Township of the mid-Monongahela
Valley.
Today, MVH offers more than 200 physicians representing
more than 40 medical specialties. Its mission is to enhance the
health of the residents of the mid-Monongahela Valley area by providing
care and services to all who are in need.
Monongahela Valley Hospital has one of the oldest
organized hospital volunteer programs in western Pennsylvania.
Energetic volunteers of all ages and skills are
needed. There are a variety of volunteer roles that are designed
to fit the time schedules, abilities and interests of any individual
who is willing to become involved in community service. One such
program is the “Ask Me!” Greeter Program.
The program is managed by Concierge Manager Erin
Sinko. “We have a wonderful team of volunteers. The feedback
we have received from patients, visitors and staff tells us that
the Greeters and other volunteers in this group have enhanced the
services which we provide. On any given day, you will find Greeters
welcoming visitors to the hospital, delivering cards and flowers,
and escorting patients and visitors throughout the facility. The
positive interactions and attitudes of this group decreases patient
stress and anxiety and is a delightful approach to meeting some
of the patient’s emotional needs.”
When considering volunteer opportunities, ask yourself
the following questions: Would I like to meet new people? Do I have
a talent or interest to share with others? Am I willing to explore
new opportunities for personal growth and explore new areas of interest?
Am I willing to try to make a difference in someone else’s
life when they are in need of a friendly face or listening ear?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, consider making a
call to ask for information about becoming a volunteer at Monongahela
Valley Hospital.
