Monongahela Valley Hospital Gives Everyone the Royal Treatment – Even Four-Legged Guests

The staff at Monongahela Valley Hospital is committed to treating everyone who visits the hospital for care as if they were their own mother or father. That commitment was vividly clear following the ice storm this past weekend. An out-of-state truck driver who was traveling with his dog was involved in an accident on icy Interstate 70. He was taken by ambulance to MVH along with his dog, Bailey, which was a Jack Russell Terrier mix.

“It was too cold to leave Bailey outside so the dog stayed in our Emergency Department in the treatment room with his owner,” said Breen Trubiani, RN, one of the nurses who was providing medical care to the truck driver. “The patient was very worried about his dog so while the medical team was providing care to the patient other staff members were caring for the dog.”

According to Ms. Trubiani, a staff member made a leash for the dog out of oxygen tubing while another went to the store after her shift to buy dog food and treats.

The patient was moved to another hospital but Bailey stayed behind with the MVH staff with the promise that they would care for the dog until the truck driver’s friend could retrieve his four-legged companion. One of the nurses took Bailey home with her but there were territorial issues between her dog and their canine guest. She returned the dog to the hospital and he was then taken home by one of the staff members from Registration with whom he stayed until his owner’s friend arrived.

“That dog was a little king in there. The only thing missing was a crown,” said Ms. Trubiani.
