Monongahela Valley Hospital Introduces Hospitalists: Attentive, Onsite Care 24/7

Beginning Monday, July11, Monongahela Valley Hospital is introducing a hospitalist program that provides a new standard of care for inpatients. Five hospitalists, who are physicians that specialize in inpatient hospital care and practice full-time within the hospital, will staff MVH on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year. There will always be a hospitalist in the building.

“The introduction of hospitalists at Monongahela Valley Hospital will increase the quality and coordination of care we provide to patients,” said R.G. Krishnan, M.D., president of MVH’s medical staff. “Their clinical experience, knowledge of and familiarity with hospital procedures and staff, and increased accessibility to patients will maximize efforts to enhance patient safety.”

Hospitalists work in partnership with PCPs by coordinating admissions and providing comprehensive 24-hour coverage while patients are in the hospital. The hospitalists work together to keep each other informed about their patients’ medical conditions and needs. Patients resume seeing their PCPs once they are discharged from the hospital; and, the PCPs will have a thorough history of the patients’ hospital admissions to continue the care.

Benefits to Inpatients and Outpatients

MVH is initiating the hospitalist program because it offers many advantages to the community. Hospitalists:

  • increase the availability of doctors in the mid-Mon Valley because hospitalists free area physicians from making hospital rounds enabling them to spend more uninterrupted time in their offices with outpatients
  • act as care providers and facilitators and they keep diagnostic tests and rehabilitative procedures moving in order to reduce hospital stays, free up beds and reduce admission wait times for new patients
  • can see the inpatient multiple times during the day providing closer attention and can facilitate a faster diagnosis
  • coordinate all of the inpatients’ care and is the main source of communication to the patients, PCPs and subspecialists which ultimately reduces errors by unifying communications
  • are in the hospital 24 hours per day and are constantly updated on patients’ conditions, and in the event that a condition changes quickly, the hospitalists can provide a rapid response to a crisis situation

When MVH initially begins its hospitalist program, the following practices will entrust their inpatient care to the hospital-based physicians:

    • Centerville Clinic Physicians
    • DeRienzo Family Practice
    • Mon Valley Community Health Services
    • Monview Family Medical Center
    • Nino Medical Associates
    • Perryo Medical Group
