Center For Wound Management
Treats First Hyperbaric Patient.
At exactly five minutes to noon, Monday through
Friday, Barb McDonald from the hospital’s gift shop begins
to prepare the grilled cheese sandwich for the order she knows is
about to come.
At noon, a Center for Wound Management staff member
delivers Andrew Sedory of Monessen to his table following his hyperbaric
oxygen therapy (HBOT) at the hospital’s Center on the fourth
floor and he places his order.
Mr. Sedory, 92, was the first patient to benefit
from the installation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy equipment at
the Center.
Richard Young, D.P.M., the Center’s co-medical
director, noted that Mr. Sedory has seen “noticeable improvement
in a short period of time.”
“Andy has responded very well to the treatments,”
he said. “With this equipment, we are using oxygen as medicine.
“Most patients receive between two and three
atmospheres of oxygen. It’s as if we are submerging them in
33 to 66 feet of water,” he said. “Andy receives two
atmospheres of 100 percent oxygen for 90 minutes.”
Prior to the hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Sedory’s
foot wound was treated with traditional approaches for more than
two months with little improvement. He is now on a regimen of 30
HBOT treatments and is about half way through.
When asked how he feels about the new procedure
Sedory noted, “Parts are healing. If it works, and it seems
to be, I love it.
“During the treatment you have to keep swallowing
or your ears plug up,” he said. “Watching TV and relaxing
helps to pass the time in the chamber.”
Sedory, a retired Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel blast
furnace supervisor who lives alone in Monessen, is transported to
and from the hospital every day via the hospital’s free outpatient
van transportation service. He eats his grilled cheese lunch while
waiting for his ride home.
