MVH Begins Construction Of Expanded Center For
Wound Management And Hyperbaric Medicine.
Center Offers Hope for
the
Treatment of Chronic Wounds
Every wound is not necessarily chronic, but when
a nonhealing wound does occur, it requires special attention. In
fact, research has consistently proven that with proper treatment
and guidance, even the most persistent wounds can be healed.
Monongahela Valley Hospital has joined with Shared
Health Services, Inc., a nationally known provider of hospital based
Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers, to expand its Center
for Wound Management to include Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
at the hospital. The expanded Center is designed to help heal wounds
that are particularly problematic to treat. The Center for Wound
Management will provide the most comprehensive, modern and compassionate
wound care available. It will continue to offer cutting edge advanced
clinical approaches to wound management and, by including Hyperbaric
Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), patients suffering from chronic wounds will
benefit from a highly effective treatment option. HBOT is an advanced
medical treatment which employs oxygen at levels higher than atmospheric
pressure to enhance natural healing for the treatment of chronic
wounds. For those with chronic wounds due to diabetes, poor circulation
and/or vascular disease, HBOT is an effective adjunctive therapy
to promote faster healing.
“Some of the most chronic wounds occur as
complications of a host of medical conditions,” explains Dr.
Richard A. Young, the Center’s current medical director at
MVH. Dr. Young cites arterial/venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, chronic
infections, unrelieved pressure sores, traumatic injuries, post-operative
complications and radiation injuries as some of the underlying conditions
which are frequently responsible for the delayed healing of many
chronic wounds.
“Our physicians focus on the source of the
wound so that the best treatment plan can be determined,”
he says.
Under the direction of Dr. Young, a multi-disciplinary
team of wound care specialists, including general surgeons, podiatrists,
plastic surgeons, infectious disease specialists, vascular surgeons,
and highly-skilled certified wound care registered nurses, works
to achieve some of the best healing rates and fastest healing times
in the nation. During the patient’s visit, the wound care
team is able to perform many advanced treatment modalities making
it one of the most convenient, comprehensive and sophisticated wound
facilities in region.
