MVH Enhances Center For Wound Management With
Addition Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Center Offers Hope for
the Treatment of Chronic Wounds
Every wound is not necessarily chronic, but when
a nonhealing wound does occur, it requires special attention. In
fact, research has consistently proven that with proper treatment
and guidance, even the most persistent wounds can be healed.
Monongahela Valley Hospital has joined with Shared
Health Services, Inc., a nationally known provider of hospital based
Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers, to expand its Center
for Wound Management to include Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
at the hospital.
The expanded Center is designed to help heal wounds
that are particularly problematic to treat along with assistance
to prevent amputation. The Center for Wound Management will provide
the most comprehensive, modern and compassionate wound care available.
It will continue to offer cutting edge advanced clinical approaches
to wound management and, by including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
(HBOT), patients suffering from chronic wounds will benefit from
a highly effective treatment option.
HBOT is an advanced medical treatment which employs
oxygen at levels higher than atmospheric pressure to enhance natural
healing for the treatment of chronic wounds and for patients whose
only previous alternative was amputation.
For those with chronic wounds due to diabetes, poor
circulation and/or vascular disease, HBOT is an effective adjunctive
therapy to promote faster healing.
“Some of the most chronic wounds occur as
complications of a host of medical conditions,” explains Dr.
Richard A. Young, the Center’s co-medical director at MVH.
Dr. Young cites arterial/venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, chronic
infections, unrelieved pressure sores, traumatic injuries, post-operative
complications and radiation injuries as some of the underlying conditions
which are frequently responsible for the delayed healing of many
chronic wounds and potential amputations.
“Our physicians focus on the source of the
wound so that the best treatment plan can be determined,”
said Gene W. Manzetti, M.D., the center’s other co-medical
director.
Using a multi-disciplinary team of wound care specialists
that include general surgeons, podiatrists, infectious disease specialists,
vascular surgeons, and highly-skilled certified wound care registered
nurses and specially trained hyperbaric technicians, some of the
best healing rates and fastest healing times in the nation may be
achieved.
During the patient’s visit, the wound care
team is able to perform many advanced treatment modalities making
it one of the most convenient, comprehensive and sophisticated wound
facilities in the region.
