MVH Will Hold Prostate Cancer
Screening and Education Event
Monongahela Valley Hospital will offer a free prostate
cancer education and screening program on Wednesday, September 23
beginning at 5:30 p.m. Advance registration is required for the
event that takes place in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference
Center on the MVH campus.
According to the American Cancer Society, other
than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American
men. The latest American Cancer Society estimates for prostate cancer
in the United States are for 2009:
- about 192,280
new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed
- 27,360 men
will die of prostate cancer
About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate
cancer during his lifetime. More than 2 million men in the United
States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point
are still alive today. The death rate for prostate cancer is going
down. And the disease is being found earlier as well.
Dr. Andrew Zahalsky, Chairman of Medical Oncology
at MVH will lead the educational portion of the presentation by
discussing prostate cancer including; options for testing and treatments;
the risk and benefits of testing; and the risks and benefits of
all treatment options.
The goal of the education program is to help men
who are at higher risk for developing prostate cancer become more
knowledgeable about prostate health. That education will help them
become more active and effective decision-makers when it comes to
deciding whether they want to be tested for prostate cancer.
Time will be allotted following the educational
presentations to allow the group to ask questions.
The American Cancer Society believes that men age
50 and older who have at least a 10-year life expectancy should
talk with their health care professional about having a digital
rectal exam of the prostate gland and a prostate-specific antigen
(PSA) blood test every year. Men who are at high risk for prostate
cancer should consider beginning these tests at an earlier age.
The screening on September 23 at Monongahela Valley
Hospital is intended to provide men with a preliminary exam to detect
prostate cancer.
At the screening, men will be offered a digital
rectal exam (DRE), the standard test for prostate cancer; a stool
blood test, and a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test.
Members of the hospital's Medical Staff and the
Vision of Hope Cancer Care Program will administer the exams.
The Vision of Hope Cancer Care Program at Monongahela
Valley Hospital is accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the
American College of Surgeons as a Community Hospital Comprehensive
Cancer Program. In order to earn accreditation, the site met or
exceeded standards for quality of care, education and continuous
quality improvement.
Although
the screening is free, appointments are required and registration
will be limited. For additional information about the screening,
call 724-258-1234.
