MVH Receives ACR Accreditation For Both MRI And Nuclear Medicine Services

Monongahela Valley Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in both MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and Nuclear Medicine services as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Both evaluations were conducted and accreditations awarded separately.

Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.

Patrick J. Alberts, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at MVH, said the hospital is “very pleased” to achieve both accreditations for its MRI and Nuclear Medicine services.

Nuclear Medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses minute amounts of radioactive material to diagnose or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease and certain other abnormalities within the body.

“Each of our nuclear cameras has specific applications that may include scans of the liver, thyroid, heart, brain, gall bladder and bones,” Alberts said.

Nuclear medicine is used not only to diagnose conditions, but also to manage, treat and prevent serious disease.
The testing is safe and painless. The amount of radiation in a nuclear medicine test is equivalent to that received during an X-ray.

“Magnetic Resonance Imaging has become one of the most valuable methods for diagnostic studies. By using a combination of radio waves and a magnetic field, MR images can differentiate between all body tissues and fluids, providing information that supplements other diagnostic tests,” Alberts said.

“This medically advanced equipment, combined with the convenience of our location and skilled and experienced radiologists and medical imaging staff, provides another diagnostic option for our patients and their doctors,” Alberts said.

“We offer MRI services at two locations. Here at the hospital and at the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX on Route 51 in Rostraver where we house an Open MRI Unit. It was added for the overall convenience of our patients and is another key tool for our physicians’ patient diagnosis,” he said.

“We are proud of the commitment of our staff in achieving these accreditations and to offer this leading edge health care technology to our area residents. We are one of a select group of hospitals in Pennsylvania to receive these accreditations.”
Alberts said that both imaging tools can reduce intervention and discomfort in the diagnosis and treatment of specific diseases, including those in oncology, cardiology, orthopedics and neurology.

Individuals seeking more information about MRI or Nuclear Medicine testing at Monongahela Valley Hospital or Mon-Vale HealthPLEX should contact his or her physician, the Medical Imaging Department at MVH at 724-258-1040 or HealthPLEX Imaging at 724-379-1900.
