| CARLYN BELCZYK
RECEIVES ATHENA AWARD
R. Carlyn Belczyk, a member of the boards of the mid-Monongahela
Valley’s largest health care system, is the 2006
recipient of the Athena Award presented by the Washington
County Chamber of Commerce.
Mrs. Belczyk, a member of
the Monongahela Valley Hospital Board of Trustees, Inc.
and the Board of Directors of
its parent company, Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc.,
received the award at the annual Women of Wisdom Symposium
at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe.
“
I am honored and humbled by this recognition,” Mrs.
Belczyk, a resident of Monessen, said. “It is a
pleasure and privilege just to be considered for the
Athena Award and to be in the company of the past recipients
and the other women of distinction who were nominated
this year.”
A nationally recognized award that honors
women’s
leadership within the business and civic communities,
the Athena Award promotes women’s leadership by
honoring exceptional individuals in the community who
contribute in significant ways to the achievements of
women. In addition, the award seeks to inspire others
to achieve excellence.
John Milinovich, chairperson of
the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, and Debra
Rhone, vice president
of National City Bank, presented the award to Mrs. Belczyk,
a partner in the accounting firm Guthrie, Belczyk & Associates,
P.C. in Washington. It was noted that she “exemplifies
all of the qualities that are at the heart of the Athena
Award.”
In addition to Mrs. Belczyk, other finalists
for the 2006 honor were Jill Ealy, exceutive director
and member
of the Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy
of Western Pennsylvania; Jeanine Henry, management consultant
for the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial
Excellence Small Business Development Center, and Sherri
Hewitt-Laird, co-founder of The Caring Mission and
founder
of The Caring Network.
Mrs. Belczyk, a native of Monessen
and a graduate of Monessen High School, graduated magna
cum laude from
the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She
is a certified public accountant, accredited in business
valuations and a certified valuation analyst.
She began
her career in public accounting in 1986 and together
with Randy Guthrie formed Guthrie, Belczyk & Associates,
P.C. in September 1993.
She is a member of the Pennsylvania
and American Institutes of Certified Public Accountants,
the National Association
of Certified Valuation Analysts and the Center for Economic
and Industry Research.
Mrs. Belczyk was the first woman
president of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce
and is currently serving as
the first woman chairman of the Washington County Community
Foundation. She also serves on the boards of Transitional
Employment Consultants (TEC) and Your Child’s Place,
a subsidiary of United Cerebral Palsy, and serves as
treasurer for the Washington Symphonic Orchestra. Also
active in other community organizations, she was a founding
member of the Women of Wisdom Committee.
In June 2005,
she was elected to three-year terms on the Monongahela
Valley Hospital Board of Trustees and
the Mon-Vale Health Resources Board of Directors. She
also serves as a member of the Executive Committee of
both boards.

The Athena Award is a distinct honor for Carlyn,” Louis
J. Panza Jr., president and chief executive officer of
Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc., said. “Her experience,
expertise and commitment have enhanced the efforts of
our boards and she is an asset to our health system and
our community.”
In 2001, Mrs. Belczyk was the recipient
of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding
Woman in Business
Award.
The daughter of Lou and Bruna Falbo of Monessen,
Mrs. Belczyk is married to Gene Belczyk, a teacher in the
Belle Vernon Area School District and a certified physical
fitness trainer. They are the parents of two grown sons,
Jacob, a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology,
a graphic artist in Chicago, Illionis, and Joshua, a
graduate of Harvard University who is employed as a plant
manager and environmental engineer near Toledo, Ohio.
National
City was the premier sponsor of this year’s
Women of Wisdom Symposium and Athena Award Luncheon,
and Washington County Chamber of Commerce was the host
sponsor.
Tori Haring-Smith, president of Washington & Jefferson
College, was the keynote speaker at the awards luncheon.
Stephanie Urchick, Ph.D., of California University of
Pennsylvania’s Southpointe Center and the 2003
Athena Award recipient, served as mistress of ceremonies.
Darcy
E. Bickerton, director of member services for the Washington
County Chamber of Commerce, and Deborah Takach,
vice president of business banking at First Commonwealth
Bank, welcomed the gathering. Also speaking briefly
was Jeff Kotula, executive director of the Chamber.
