CARLYN BELCZYK RECEIVES ATHENA AWARD

R. Carlyn Belczyk, a member of the boards of the mid-Monongahela Valley’s largest health care system, is the 2006 recipient of the Athena Award presented by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Belczyk, a member of the Monongahela Valley Hospital Board of Trustees, Inc. and the Board of Directors of its parent company, Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc., received the award at the annual Women of Wisdom Symposium at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe.

“ I am honored and humbled by this recognition,” Mrs. Belczyk, a resident of Monessen, said. “It is a pleasure and privilege just to be considered for the Athena Award and to be in the company of the past recipients and the other women of distinction who were nominated this year.”

A nationally recognized award that honors women’s leadership within the business and civic communities, the Athena Award promotes women’s leadership by honoring exceptional individuals in the community who contribute in significant ways to the achievements of women. In addition, the award seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence.

John Milinovich, chairperson of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, and Debra Rhone, vice president of National City Bank, presented the award to Mrs. Belczyk, a partner in the accounting firm Guthrie, Belczyk & Associates, P.C. in Washington. It was noted that she “exemplifies all of the qualities that are at the heart of the Athena Award.”

In addition to Mrs. Belczyk, other finalists for the 2006 honor were Jill Ealy, exceutive director and member of the Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy of Western Pennsylvania; Jeanine Henry, management consultant for the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence Small Business Development Center, and Sherri Hewitt-Laird, co-founder of The Caring Mission and founder of The Caring Network.

Mrs. Belczyk, a native of Monessen and a graduate of Monessen High School, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.

She is a certified public accountant, accredited in business valuations and a certified valuation analyst. She began her career in public accounting in 1986 and together with Randy Guthrie formed Guthrie, Belczyk & Associates, P.C. in September 1993.

She is a member of the Pennsylvania and American Institutes of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts and the Center for Economic and Industry Research.

Mrs. Belczyk was the first woman president of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and is currently serving as the first woman chairman of the Washington County Community Foundation. She also serves on the boards of Transitional Employment Consultants (TEC) and Your Child’s Place, a subsidiary of United Cerebral Palsy, and serves as treasurer for the Washington Symphonic Orchestra. Also active in other community organizations, she was a founding member of the Women of Wisdom Committee.

In June 2005, she was elected to three-year terms on the Monongahela Valley Hospital Board of Trustees and the Mon-Vale Health Resources Board of Directors. She also serves as a member of the Executive Committee of both boards.

“ The Athena Award is a distinct honor for Carlyn,” Louis J. Panza Jr., president and chief executive officer of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc., said. “Her experience, expertise and commitment have enhanced the efforts of our boards and she is an asset to our health system and our community.”

In 2001, Mrs. Belczyk was the recipient of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Woman in Business Award.

The daughter of Lou and Bruna Falbo of Monessen, Mrs. Belczyk is married to Gene Belczyk, a teacher in the Belle Vernon Area School District and a certified physical fitness trainer. They are the parents of two grown sons, Jacob, a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, a graphic artist in Chicago, Illionis, and Joshua, a graduate of Harvard University who is employed as a plant manager and environmental engineer near Toledo, Ohio.

National City was the premier sponsor of this year’s Women of Wisdom Symposium and Athena Award Luncheon, and Washington County Chamber of Commerce was the host sponsor.

Tori Haring-Smith, president of Washington & Jefferson College, was the keynote speaker at the awards luncheon. Stephanie Urchick, Ph.D., of California University of Pennsylvania’s Southpointe Center and the 2003 Athena Award recipient, served as mistress of ceremonies.
