Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Healthy Communities Program was introduced in 1992 in conjunction with the Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania. The goal of the Healthy Communities Program is to measurably improve the health status of the mid-Monongahela Valley area students.

The Healthy Communities program has received statewide and regional recognition from the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania and Hospital Council of Western Pennsylvania.

Monongahela Valley Hospital is in partnership with the following school districts: Belle-Vernon, Bentworth, Beth Center, California, Charleroi, Frazier, Monessen, Ringgold, and Yough.

Hospital staff serve as "champions" or "liaisons" with the school districts. Meetings are conducted with school superintendents and other school personnel to reinforce our commitment to the program and to plan a yearly calendar of activities.

Monongahela Valley Hospital has nearly many health and wellness programs available for the nine districts that equate with nearly 20,000 students at 30 individualized school buildings.

A survey, completed by school administrators, indicated that the top priority health status issues of students are: Drug/Alcohol Abuse, Violent Behavior, Sexuality/Teen Pregnancy, Nutrition, Fitness and Wellness.

As a result of the Healthy Communities survey, the Prevention Partnership Task Force was formed. The Task Force is dedicated to the prevention and intervention of the use of Alcohol, Drugs and Violence and other high-risk behaviors in youths.
