MVH’S CENTER FOR WOUND MANAGEMENT

Richard A. Young, D.P.M., was appointed as Medical Director of the Center for Wound Management at Monongahela Valley Hospital.

He completed his Podiatric Surgical Residency at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA from 1994-1996 and a Medical Podiatric Residency at the Medical College Hospitals, Elkins Park Campus, Elkins Park, PA from 1993-1994 and graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association and is active in state and national Podiatric Medical Associations.

As medical director, Dr. Young will assist in overseeing operations and developing the services at the Center for Wound Management at MVH. Dr. Young was instrumental in establishing the hospital-based Center for Wound Management in 2002. The Center for Wound Management is committed to providing quality care for patients with chronic, non-healing wounds and coordinating outpatient procedures and activities required for optimal care of patients.

“ The team at the Center for Wound Management is very pleased that Dr. Young was appointed medical director. His leadership skills, expertise and dedication to the Center for Wound Management will greatly benefit the patients we serve,” says Andrea Russo, RN, BSN, Center for Wound Management.

The Center for Wound Management is designed to treat patients with chronic, non-healing wounds. A chronic, non-healing wound is one that does not show improvement after four weeks, or has not healed after six to eight weeks. These types of wounds are typically associated with diabetes, poor circulation, pressure, infection, renal failure and poor nutrition.

The Center for Wound Management offers management of various types of ulcers, skin complications and complex surgical wounds. In addition, the staff provides advanced wound technology, dressing changes, wound grafting, routine follow-up for ostomy patients, compression therapy, assessments of nutritional status, social services for changes in life patterns and patient/family education.

The outpatient treatment program at the Center for Wound Management takes a holistic approach to treating the entire patient, not just the wound. The Center for Wound Management’s skilled team of physicians and wound care nurses work with patients to determine the underlying cause of the wound, create an individualized treatment plan, care for the wound, and reduce the risk of future occurrences. Each patient has an interdisciplinary team available to them comprised of multiple physician specialists, nutritionists, physical therapy consultants and visiting nurses to help to better manage the treatment of the wound. Family members are included in the patient’s individualized care plan and receive education on providing the proper care at home.

Russo says, “Every wound is unique and every patient heals differently and that is why it is vitally important to get follow up care for chronic wounds. We provide many different treatment modalities to patients. Patients receive the treatment that is unique to his or her wound.”

Along with Dr. Young, The Center for Wound Management includes the expertise of physicians Gene W. Manzetti, M.D., Charles N. Lebovitz, M.D., Lisa D. Gallo, D.P.M., Chito M. Crudo, M.D., Edgar C. Cordero, M.D., and Jerome Canady, M.D.

The Center for Wound Management is committed to ensuring an interdisciplinary approach of care for all residents of the Mon Valley and is accepting new patients. Please contact the Center for Wound Management at 724-258-1912 for more information.
