Infusion Center
Monongahela Valley Hospital's Ambulatory Infusion Center
is located on the second floor of the Charles L. and Rose

Infusion is the introduction of a substance (i.e., fluid,

often by gravitational force such as an infusion pump.
The Ambulatory Infusion Center at MVH is currently offering

and pituitary glands are normal.

on the 3rd. floor of the Sweeney-Melenyzer Pavilion. The
Sleep Laboratory offers a very comfortable, discrete atmosphere
featuring a
private
bedroom and bath setting. The Lab has been established to
aid in diagnosing breathing-related sleep disorders, such
as
obstructive
sleep
apnea. The Sleep Lab is operated under the direction of
a physician who is board-certified in sleep medicine, and
staffed
by registered respiratory therapists who are specially trained
in polysomnographic technology (the study of sleep disorders).
Sleep apnea means an individual "stops breathing" periodically
during sleep. Airways become blocked during sleep, making
breathing difficult. Some causes of sleep apnea include
being overweight, having a narrow throat, jaw structure,
of nasal obstruction.
Some symptoms of sleep disorders are excessive daytime
sleepiness, loud snoring, depression (reduced sense of
well-being), lack of energy and motivation, impotence,
anxiety, obesity, high blood pressure, awakening with a
choking feeling or gasping for air, racing heartbeat during
the night, and frequent awakenings.
After an individual's personal physician or specialist
refers him/her for Sleep Lab services, an appointment is
necessary to be scheduled for the polysomnogram (sleep
Study). On
the evening of the sleep study, patients arrive at the
sleep lab and are required to stay overnight.
The sleep technologist reviews the patient's medical history
and
asks questions about their activities and sleep habits.
Sensors are attached to various parts of the patient's
skin. These sensors are attached to state-of-the-art monitoring
equipment that will measure the patient's brain waves,
eye movements, heart rate, muscle activity, oxygen levels,
and breathing patterns during sleep. In the morning, patients
awake and may enjoy a light snack before preparing for
their day at home or work.
Following the sleep study, the physician reviews the results
and makes recommendations to the patient's personal physician.
Recommendations may include weight loss, nasal continuous
positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP), medication, sleep
pattern changes, dental appliances, or surgery.
Individuals interested in the Sleep Lab studies at Monongahela
Valley Hospital should contact their personal physician
for a prescription and then call the Sleep Lab at
724-258-1490 to schedule an appointment.
