• Oncology Services & Regional Cancer Center

MVH's Inpatient Oncology Unit and its Charles L. and Rose Sweeney-Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center provide high-quality and compassionate care to its cancer patients. Comprehensive oncology services include medical oncology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology and surgical services. MVH’s Cancer Program is approved by the American College of Surgeons.

A staff of skilled physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists and case management coordinators help the patient and family during all phases of cancer. Besides medical care, the staffs of both the Inpatient Oncology Unit and the Cancer Center offer educational and emotional support and counseling.

The Cancer Center provides the most up-to-date chemotherapy treatment, clinical trials and innovative therapies for symptom management. The Center’s state-of-the-art equipment for radiation therapy includes a simulator and linear accelerator that has the capability to administer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). IMRT directs higher doses of radiation to tumors while minimizing the exposure of surrounding healthy tissue. MVH also focuses on prevention and early detection of cancer through support groups, education and screenings.

Recent enhancements to our radiation therapy treatments include the capability to utilize Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) for prostate cancer treatment.

IGRT utilizes ultrasound technology to localize the prostate daily to provide even more accuracy to our IMRT treatments further minimizing the exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
