Monongahela Valley Hospital and Local 8041 Reach New Contract

(June 27, 2014 - Carroll Township, Pa.)

Monongahela Valley Hospital and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 8041 have a new three-year contract which begins July 1, 2014.

In voting sessions held Thursday at the Donora Fire Hall, union members approved the pact by a nearly 3 to 1 margin. The new contract runs through June 30, 2017.

Local 8041 represents approximately one half of the hospital's 1,200 employees including technical staff; nursing assistants; unit clerks; laundry; nutrition and food service; housekeeping; and maintenance personnel. Nurses at Monongahela Valley Hospital are not members of the union.

"We are pleased that union members approved the new contract," said Louis J. Panza Jr., president and CEO of Monongahela Valley Hospital. "By ratifying the contract prior to the June 30 expiration of their previous contract, union leadership and members of Local 8041 are to be commended for once again demonstrating their commitment to our hospital and most importantly, our patients and this community by ensuring that they will continue to receive the highest quality of care."

Mr. Panza continued, "We deeply appreciate the extensive efforts of both negotiating teams, whose members worked diligently over the past few weeks to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Unquestionably, Monongahela Valley Hospital's greatest asset is its people - the dedicated, hard-working employees, physicians and volunteers who provide quality, state-of-the-art care and service to our patients and visitors each day. I consider it an honor and privilege to work with this outstanding team to carry out our mission of caring for our community."

Louis Goodman, vice president of Human Resources and lead negotiator for the hospital, said wages and health care provisions were a major focus of the new contract.

Mr. Goodman praised Local 8041's bargaining team for their efforts during the negotiations which ended when a tentative agreement was reached on Monday evening. Union leaders recommended approval of the contract to the membership during informational sessions on Wednesday.

"The bargaining team demonstrated a firm commitment to the hospital throughout the negotiations," said Mr. Goodman.

Rich McGinn, acting president of Local 8041 shared Mr. Goodman's sentiments. "Union leadership respected the hospital's professionalism throughout the talks and we are grateful that we could reach a mutually beneficial agreement."
