Clinical Nutrition and Diabetes

Clinical Nutrition

MVH's Clinical Nutrition and Diabetes Department offers medical nutrition therapy to the community, including individualized nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian.

What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
Registered Dietitian is a food and nutrition expert, an important part of the health care team and is able to best assess nutritional status and needs, thereby tailoring nutritional care and advice to the individual patient.

What can I expect from meeting with a Registered Dietitian?
MVH nutrition counseling is based on an analysis of each participant's medical history, eating habits and lifestyle. A registered dietitian designs each plan to meet any special health needs, and participants are counseled on how to fit their meal plan into normal daily living.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Obtain a written prescription from your physician with your diagnosis or nutrition concern.
  • Schedule an appointment in advance.

Services are available for a variety of conditions including:

  • Pre-surgery counseling for bariatric surgery
  • Nutrition therapy for hypertension and high blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Malnutrition
  • Weight control
  • Other conditions as deemed appropriate by the physician and/or dietitian

After each visit, a brief summary of your appointments is sent to your referring physician. Follow up visits are scheduled as needed.

Nutrition therapy for the Cardiac Rehabilitation program is also a service provided by the registered dietitians. A registered dietitian meets with participants when they are attending their regularly scheduled Cardiac Rehabilitation sessions.

Some insurance companies include nutrition counseling in their benefit package. Each insurance company is contacted to determine coverage of nutrition counseling by a registered dietitian before a visit is scheduled. Your insurance company will be billed, and you will be responsible for the balance of payment.
